New to My TBR, August ’20

This year has flown by. Back in early March, just before lockdown, I was lucky enough to spend the big 3-0 in Arizona soaking up some sun and attending a music festival to see Rüfüs du Sol. Things with Covid were just starting to really ramp up here in the U.S. and the severity of the situation hadn’t set in quite yet.

Needless to say, I’ve had a lot more time since then to read and add books to my never-ending TBR. Here are some, both new and old, that I’ve added this month!

Leave the World Behind

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam
Genre: Suspense
Publication Date: October 6th, 2020

An unknown catastrophe has happened in the city and two families are stranded in a remote location not too far away with no TV or internet. What happened? Who can be trusted? I don’t know, but I need to find out!!

Transcendent Kingdom

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Publication Date: September 1st, 2020

This novel is actually a sequel to Homegoing and is about a fifth year Ghanaian woman in Neuroscience at Stanford (Women in STEM!!) studying the behavioral effects of depression and addiction, two conditions plaguing members of her own family.

Plain Bad Heroines

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth
Genre: Horror (historical, lgbqtia+)
Publication Date: October 20th, 2020

Just in time for Halloween, this spooky, gothic tale kicks off in the early 1900s with some mysterious deaths at a boarding school.

One Last Stop

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
Genre: Contemporary Fiction (lgbqtia+)
Publication Date: June 1st, 2021

So I haven’t seen much about the plot of this one, however based on McQuiston’s previous novel, Red, White & Royal Blue, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab
Genre: Fantasy
Publication Date: October 6th, 2020

Addie LaRue makes a deal in order to live forever, but the catch is she’s cursed to be forgotten. Those that have read the advanced copy have compared it to Life After Life by Kate Atkinson and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, both of which are novels I love with my entire being.

People of Abandoned Character

People of Abandoned Character by Clare Whitfield
Genre: Historical Mystery
Publication Date: October 1st, 2020

A retelling of the story of Jack the Ripper. And thanks to Dracula, I have a major soft spot for stories taking place in the late 1800s London. Sign me up!

Lily and the Octopus

Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Publication Date: June 7th, 2016

This lighthearted story is about a Dachshund named Lily (insert excessive amount of heart-eye emojis here). That’s it. That’s all I need.

The Last True Poets of the Sea

The Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake
Genre: YA (lgbtqia+)
Publication Date: October 1st, 2019

Shipwrecks, the Northeast United States, and the sea. Need I say more?

Home Before Dark

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
Genre: Horror
Publication Date: June 30th, 2020

I’m usually not into horror, mostly because I’m a scaredy cat, but I have heard so many good reviews about Sager’s most recent novel. And since we’re coming up on Halloween, what better time to experience some spook factor?

The Bone Houses

The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones
Genre: Fantasy (YA)
Publication Date: September 24th, 2019

This is another Halloween-ish book I’m looking forward to reading. I’m really intrigued by this unique storyline about gravediggers and the cursed risen corpses.

House of Salt and Sorrows

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
Genre: Fantasy (YA)
Publication Date: August 6th, 2019

“In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.“
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

The Space Between Worlds

The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
Genre: Sci-Fi
Publication Date: August 4th, 2020

I discovered this novel about multiverses in which a doppelgänger of yourself lives on each through Book of the Month Club. It actually did not end up being my pick this month (I went with Atomic Love), but it was a close second. Since then I’ve read rave reviews.

The Guest List

The Guest List by Lucy Foley
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Publication Date: June 2nd, 2020

What drew me to this book is mostly the fact that it takes place on an island off the coast of Ireland. The fact that there’s a murder at a luxurious wedding is just a nice bonus.

If you’ve read any of these, how did you like them? Are there any great reads I missed that I should add to my list?

These are a great mix of books. I haven’t read any of these but there are a couple I like the sound of.

I hadn’t heard of Leave the World Behind before now and it sounds sooo good. Definitely one that needs adding to my TBR so thank you so much for bringing it to my attention. 🙂
